Pimp your ride!

At the Design Museum Næstved we are currently putting together a new design exhibition on the relationship between craftsmanship and technology. We hope to attract both gadget freaks as well as visitors interested in innovative design for everyday use.

Before industrialization was widespread handcrafting techniques were always used in the production of technological objects. Handmade details were part of the first electrical gramophones, the early trains and cars, of hairdryers and lamps. This is not the case anymore. Today, almost all design products can be produced mechanically. When we come across modern technological products in our day to day lives made by hand or heavily inspired by craft techniques, it is the result of a conscious choice made by the designer or product developer. They combine craftsmanship and technology either because it is trendy, because they wish to challenge design boundaries or simply because it is possible and fun.

In this exhibition, we will show how technology and craftsmanship are combined in products from major design companies, from individual designers and from the DIY communities. The main themes in the exhibition will be man vs. machine, customization of design, sustainability, hipster culture and alternative design.

Both Danish and international design will be represented in the exhibition. Visitors can look forward to seeing watches made of old Ford Mustang cars, a lamp made of sealskin, a crystal gearshift handmade by the Orrefors glass factory for Volvo Cars, a mouth-blown glass loudspeaker made by Holmegaard and ceramic USB keys from Kähler Design. We are also pleased to present the amazing, custom-built XJR1300 Yamaha motorbike made by the Danish motorcycle company Wrenchmonkees.

The exhibition will be held at the Design Museum Næstved, Boderne, Sct. Peder Kirkeplads 8, 4700 Næstved, Denmark from June 3 – September 30 2017.
