ABOUT MUSEUM
SOUTHEASTERN DENMARK

Museum Sydøstdanmark is one of the country's largest state-recognized cultural history museums. Read more about the organization on the back of this page.

Museum Sydøstdanmark is one of the country's largest state-recognized cultural history museums. Based in the municipalities of Næstved, Køge and Vordingborg, we operate both three local cultural history museums and three national museums: Vikingeborgen Borgring, Holmegaard Værk and Danmarks Borgcenter. Together they create a unique cultural history landscape with both locally rooted stories and attractions of national and international importance.

Our collections contain more than 250,000 objects – from Holmegaard's world-famous glass and Kähler's iconic ceramics to medieval royal buildings, the Viking Age, industrial history and everyday life through the centuries. In addition, there are three cultural environments of particular importance: the UNESCO-protected ring fortress Borgring, the unique industrial environment at Holmegaard Glassworks and Denmark's largest royal castle in Vordingborg with the Gåsetårnet as a landmark.

OUR MISSION AND AMBITION

Museum Sydøstdanmark's most important task is to make the past alive, relevant and accessible to everyone. We work to preserve, explore and communicate cultural heritage so that it has significance for both the present and future generations. The museum must be a place where new knowledge is created, where perspectives are challenged, and where opinions and communities can arise across age, background and interests.

In the strategy period 2024–2028, we focus particularly on:

  • engage children, young people and new museum visitors
  • strengthen research, collection development and digital access
  • create strong cultural experiences with an international perspective
  • actively contribute to tourism, business and local development
  • work focused on sustainability – environmentally, socially and economically

Museum Southeastern Denmark is committed to lifting the museum sector into a greener future. This means less environmental impact, more social sustainability and close collaboration with municipalities, educational institutions and other cultural actors. We work actively for a strong and attractive working environment and to strengthen the relationship work with the many volunteers who are an invaluable part of the museum's operations.
