When you stand on Borgring, you are in the middle of an archaeological mystery. Here once stood an enormous circular Viking castle – built with a precision and geometry that was centuries ahead of its time. It was erected by Harald Bluetooth around the year 980, as part of his grandiose plans for a united, Christian Denmark.

And then it disappeared. Almost without a trace.

Borgring was a manifesto of power without equal: 144 meters in diameter, built of massive amounts of earth, timber and turf. But when archaeologists began to dig, they found... almost nothing. No houses. No roads. No graves. Just the perfect circle of the rampart and the four gates, pointing to the corners of the world. Was Borgring never completed? Was it a prototype? Or was it built purely as a symbol – without any practical function?

At Borgring you can follow the archaeologists' tracks, see where they have dug, and read what they found – and didn't find. You will learn about modern excavation techniques such as lidar, gradiometer and carbon-14 dating, and you will understand why Borgring still raises more questions than answers to this day.
