In the exhibition THE GLASSWORKS, you get up close to life as a glassworker at Holmegaard Glassworks. It was here in the glass hut that glassmakers blew glass, pulled stems and shaped bases, working in the intense heat of the large tank furnace.

The heat is no longer here. When the furnace was shut down, 45 tonnes of molten glass slowly settled and solidified within it. And when the glassworks closed in 2008, the site was left in haste. Dust still lingers on the control panels, and the furnace stands like a great mausoleum – filled with a mass of cold glass that will never be shaped again.

MEET THE GLASSBLOWERS

When you visit the exhibition THE GLASSWORKS, we take you back to the heat of the tank furnace – with respect for a place that, for nearly 200 years, was the workplace of generations of glassworkers.

They are the ones telling the stories through short podcasts you can listen to, while your eyes are drawn to captivating light installations and immersive animations.

You can also see how glass is made. In a new and modern workshop, a team of skilled glassmakers offers insight into the process as they, in collaboration with guest artists, once again fire up the furnaces and let Holmegaard Glassworks become the setting for a new production of glass art.

You can experience the glassblowers at Holmegaard Works of Wonders on all opening days from 10:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00.
