ABOUT THE COURSE

A workshop course with a focus on sustainability and creativity. Here, the process is given high importance, which strengthens the students' form of expression, self-confidence and self-understanding.

At Holmegaard Værk, the senses are in focus. Together we delve into the world of glass through activities that challenge both intellect, senses and creativity to gain a broader understanding of what glass is like.

Materials science & experiment

One part of the course focuses on materials science, where students learn about the possibilities and properties of glass: We experience the liquid glass in the museum's glass blowing room, learn more about all the places where glass hides in our everyday lives, and what special properties glass can have in relation to reflection, light, size, etc. through various exercises that strengthen community, development and well-being.

In our creative workshop, students will also have to try their hand at making thin glass threads go from solid to liquid form - here the process is emphasized rather than just the result.

Design expertise & product development

The second part of the course is about design skills and product development. Here, you don't just have to decorate a glass – you have to decorate it to suit a very special situation and customer. Each student takes home a sandblasted glass after they have embossed it based on an in-depth buyer analysis adapted to the age group.

The glass pieces are decorated using sandblasting and engraving techniques.

During the visit, the students gain in-depth knowledge of art glass, packaging glass, production methods, recyclability and resource consumption.

Competency goals - Crafts & Design

The student can use tools, implements and machines safely for processing materials.

  • The student can select basic tools and implements according to their purpose - we work with sandblasting and engraving glass, the student plans for himself, after thorough guidance, how to best balance the techniques.
  • The student can work exploratively with crafts according to their intention - based on a sufficient personal characteristic, a targeted design is prepared.
  • The student can plan, describe and carry out simple manual work processes.

The student can process materials in relation to the product's form, function and expression.

  • The student gains knowledge about the use of glass as both a soft and hard material.
  • The student has knowledge about the processing possibilities of soft and hard materials - we process the glass from liquid to solid form and from solid to liquid form. They learn about the strength/fragility, recycling and function of glass.
  • The student can work with the aesthetic expression of products.

The student can work with simple design processes related to their own product manufacturing.

  • The student can talk about ideas for a product - through our persona worksheet, the student learns to create a mood board, work with the Minerva model, identify interests and personality types in words and images, and select a product and an aesthetic impression based on this.
  • The student can explain and outline ideas as intended.
  • The student gains knowledge about the purpose of sources of information and inspiration.
  • The student can manufacture products based on ideas and acquires knowledge about the purpose of design processes in connection with product manufacturing.
Competency goals - Visual arts

Image production

  • The student can express themselves in flat images: The student learns to draw and sketch based on ideas and experiences acquired at the museum. The student then produces a collage with a thematic content using sandblasting based on a customer analysis.
  • The student learns to draw wholes and details based on observations in our worksheet.
  • The student can experiment with and express themselves in images with an emphasis on thematization, the student learns to produce a collage with a thematic content on glass.

Image communication

  • The student can communicate through pictures.
  • The student can express ideas and meanings visually.
Interdisciplinarity

This course includes elements from nature/technology, history, Danish, mathematics, and physics/chemistry.

The tour focuses on the 200-year historical perspective on glassworks, the recyclability of glass and the Danish production system. The material teacher is expressed in experiments with glass in liquid form, where we work with geometric shapes in glass threads.
