ABOUT THE COURSE

Holmegaard Værk's ceramic collection is full of history and good craftsmanship. Here you will find the multi-artist Reistrup, who excelled in decorating buildings with large mosaics. Next to the museum is Ardagh Glasværk, one of the world's leading producers of sustainable glass; the production consists of 90% recycled glass. These two aspects are combined in a process. Around Holmegaard Glasværk, sparkling glass shards are found everywhere - some almost 200 years old. During the process, we go into the bog and collect shards and recycle them into art a la Reistrup. The glass shards are cast into a plaster mass, where a beautiful work of art is created - in the spirit of Reistrup, we work with the animal world.

Practical exercises & idea generation

During the course, we focus on the students' individual development, through conversation exercises and small hands-on challenges that open up idea generation and strengthen the students' personal expression.

The students make their own mosaics in the workshop - from idea to finished product - with a fully implemented process.

The frieze and animal motifs

We work from Reistrup's sculptural work with the frieze and his love of animal motifs. The focus is on the spacious image - the students create their own compositions in glass and plaster. We also see the large exhibition of Per Steen Hebsgaard's glass works in light of the students' own work with the glass mosaic.

The workshop offers space for play, experimentation and the opportunity for immersion. The most important thing in the workshop is the process, giving space to creative impulses, creating something and learning about the media that are found both in the collection and everywhere in everyday life. The course helps students to stimulate curiosity and find new possibilities in the materials with a focus on recyclability and the environment.

Competency goals - Crafts & Design

Students can use tools and implements safely to process materials.

  • Students can work exploratively with crafts according to their intention - based on a comprehensive demo and collection of relevant materials in the outdoor area, a targeted design is prepared.
  • Students can plan, describe and carry out simple craft work processes where they work with plaster and glass mosaics.

Students can process materials in relation to the product's form, function and expression.

  • Students gain knowledge about the use and recyclability of glass.
  • Students gain knowledge about the processing options of soft and hard materials - we work with plaster from liquid to solid form.
  • Students can work with the aesthetic expression of products.

The student can work with simple design processes related to their own product manufacturing.

  • Students learn to talk about ideas for a product.
  • Students learn to explain and outline ideas as intended.
  • Students gain knowledge about the purpose of sources of information and inspiration.
  • Students learn to manufacture products based on ideas and acquire knowledge about the purpose of design processes in connection with product manufacturing.
Competency goals - Visual arts

Image production

  • The student can express themselves in flat images: The student learns to draw and sketch based on ideas and experiences acquired at the museum. The student then produces a stylized version of a chosen animal motif.
  • Students learn to draw wholes and details based on observations in the exhibition and through a series of hands-on tasks in groups as well as individually.
  • The students experiment with and express themselves in images with an emphasis on thematization. The students learn to produce a spacious image with thematic content in plaster and glass.
  • Students learn to make spatial constructions in plaster and glass.
  • Students acquire knowledge about materials (glass and plaster) and joining techniques from here.
  • Students learn to create a sculpture/a spatial image.
  • Students gain knowledge about site-specific installation art.

Image analysis

  • Students learn to talk about their own and others' pictures, especially about structure and content.
  • Students learn about image composition.
  • Students acquire knowledge about balance and rhythm in visual expression.
  • Students gain knowledge about styles and idioms.

Image communication

  • The student can communicate through pictures.
  • The student can express ideas and meanings visually.
Interdisciplinarity

This course includes elements from nature/technology, history, Danish, mathematics, physics/chemistry.

The 200-year historical perspective on glassworks, the reusability of glass and the Danish production system are particularly emphasized in the tour. The material teacher is expressed in the work with the liquid plaster. In our image production we work with simplification and geometric figures for image construction.
